Ultracol, Juvelook Volume or Sculptra? The collagen stimulator Korean doctors pick for under-eye hollows.

Ultracol, Juvelook Volume or Sculptra? The collagen stimulator Korean doctors pick for under-eye hollows.

All three rebuild volume with your own collagen. They differ in strength, in how long the particles stay in your skin, and in where a doctor can safely place them — which is why only one is routinely used right under the eye.

Quick answer

Ultracol, Juvelook Volume, and Sculptra are all collagen stimulators, but they trade volume for safety. Sculptra (PLLA) builds the most volume with the highest nodule risk; Juvelook Volume (PDLLA plus HA) sits in the middle; Ultracol (PDO) builds the least volume but breaks down within about 6 months, which is why Korean doctors use it for thin under-eye skin.

Sessions

Usually a course — often 2 or more sessions about a month apart. The doctor sets the number after seeing how much volume you have lost.

Typical Korean price

Priced per vial and set at consultation — it depends on the product, strength, and how many vials your face needs. See the Juvelook cost guide and Korean clinic prices for current local benchmarks.

Fillers add volume today. Collagen stimulators build it over weeks.

Hyaluronic acid filler takes up space the moment it goes in. A collagen stimulator does not. It places tiny biodegradable particles under the skin; your body treats them as foreign material, and that mild reaction triggers new collagen. As the particles slowly break down, your own collagen fills in where they were.

That is the appeal — a gradual, natural-looking change built from your own tissue — and the catch: the doctor has to predict a result that has not happened yet. Ask most Korean patients to name a collagen stimulator and they will say Juvelook Volume or Sculptra. Ultracol is less famous, but on paper it solves a problem the other two cannot: it can be used in the thinnest skin on the face.

Meet the three

Ultracol is made of PDO (polydioxanone) — the same dissolvable material used in PDO thread lifts, milled into small round microparticles. If you have had threads and noticed your skin felt firmer and thicker months later, that was the same collagen effect. It comes in two strengths: Ultracol 100 has smaller particles at a lower concentration and is used like a skin booster — texture, firmness, pores. Ultracol 200 has larger particles at a higher concentration and is used to refill hollows and deeper lines.

Juvelook Volume combines PDLLA microspheres with hyaluronic acid. The HA gives some same-day plumping; the PDLLA drives the slower collagen build. It is Korea's most-booked Sculptra alternative for cheeks and temples.

Sculptra is pure PLLA, the original collagen stimulator. Its particles are irregular and angular, which provokes the strongest collagen response of the three — and the strongest volume.

"Particles break down in" is how long the material itself stays in the skin. The visible result usually lasts longer, because the new collagen stays after the particles are gone — see our volumizer comparison for how long results typically last. "Relative" means compared with each other; nodules are uncommon with all three when injected well.

The trade-off: staying power versus lump risk

The main complication with any collagen stimulator is a nodule — a small firm lump where particles cluster and the immune reaction overshoots. Two things push that risk up: particles that stay in the skin longer, and particles with sharper, more irregular shapes. Both also drive a stronger collagen response. So the ranking flips depending on what you care about.

For volume, it is Sculptra, then Juvelook Volume, then Ultracol. For safety in delicate areas, it is the reverse. Ultracol's PDO breaks down within about six months and its particles are smooth and uniform, which is why doctors are comfortable placing it right under the eye — where skin is thinnest and any lump would show. Longer-lasting is not automatically better. It is a different tool for a different area.

Technique closes much of the gap. With careful hydration of the product, injection at a safe depth and dose, and thorough massage afterwards, nodule rates for Sculptra and Juvelook Volume drop a lot. But in very thin skin, even a small lump is visible, so Korean doctors still default to the gentlest option there.

Where they work — and where they do not

Good for: broad areas that need gentle refilling rather than a defined shape — hollow front and side cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and chest lines. Ultracol additionally covers under-eye hollows and fine lines around the eyes.

Not for: anything that needs sculpting — the nose bridge, the nose tip, chin projection. A collagen stimulator spreads volume across an area; it cannot build a precise shape. That is what hyaluronic acid filler is for. If you are unsure which you need, our filler guide covers the other side of the decision.

Why the doctor matters more than the product

Two things decide the result, and neither is printed on the box.

Dose. Because the volume appears weeks later, the doctor has to estimate how much your face can take. Too much, and product can spread beyond the target area and leave unwanted fullness elsewhere. Too little, and the result is underwhelming. Two people with "under-eye hollows" can need very different amounts depending on the depth and size of the hollow. That judgement comes from clinical volume, not from a protocol sheet.

Technique. Collagen stimulators should go in as many tiny, evenly spread deposits at a safe depth — usually a fan technique — rather than a few large deposits in one spot. Large deposits weaken the effect and raise the nodule risk. Careful, small-volume placement takes time, which is why a rushed, high-turnover consultation is the wrong setting for this treatment.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is this Ultracol 100 or Ultracol 200 — and why that strength for my concern?
  • Is my under-eye issue a hollow, or a bag? Adding volume to a fat bulge can make it look worse.
  • How many sessions do you expect, and how far apart?
  • What depth and technique will you use, and what massage or aftercare do you want from me?
  • Can you open the vial in front of me?

What we would tell you not to do

  • Do not expect Ultracol alone to fill a deep hollow. Significant volume loss may need several sessions or a stronger product in a different area.
  • Do not book a collagen stimulator for an event next week. The result builds over weeks; filler or a skin treatment is the honest answer for a near-term date.
  • Do not choose on price per vial. With these products, the injector matters more than the brand.

Fun facts & trivia

  • Ultracol is made by UltraV, a Korean company best known for PDO threads — Ultracol is essentially that thread material turned into an injectable powder.
  • PDO has been used in dissolvable surgical sutures for decades, which is why doctors were comfortable repurposing it for aesthetics.
  • The three products are often described as one family: same principle, different particle. The particle's shape and lifespan decide almost everything else.

Common questions

What is Ultracol?

Ultracol is a Korean collagen stimulator made from PDO (polydioxanone), the same dissolvable material used in PDO thread lifts, processed into small round microparticles. Ultracol comes in two strengths: Ultracol 100 is used as a skin booster for texture, firmness, and pores, while Ultracol 200 is used to refill hollows and deeper lines.

Is Ultracol or Sculptra better for under-eye hollows?

For under-eye hollows, Korean doctors generally prefer Ultracol over Sculptra. Ultracol's PDO particles are small, uniform, and break down within about 6 months, so the risk of a visible lump in thin under-eye skin is the lowest of the common collagen stimulators. Sculptra builds more volume but carries a higher nodule risk and is generally avoided directly under the eye.

How many Ultracol sessions do I need?

Most patients need more than one Ultracol session, because collagen stimulators build volume gradually rather than on the day. Doctors typically space sessions about a month apart and decide the number after seeing how much volume has been lost. A single session can improve mild hollowing, but deeper hollows usually take a course.
